Pros: freedom of customization, Multiple ports (3 USB2.0, 4pin firewire, SD card), Tough, long battery
Cons: A little sluggish with pen tracking, Heavy, Toshiba accesories expensive
Summary: I had been shopping for a tablet PC for a while, having been quite impressed with what I had seen, and excited about the possiblities of the increased mobility. I discovered the R10, and havent looked back.
The customization process was easy. I was able to pick my processesor, memory, hard drive space, pretty much everything, and it was shipped to me promptly.
The machine has lived up to all of my expectations and more. With the boosted memory (2 slots) and the optional processer speed, this thing zips through such intensive programs like Photoshop with ease. The multiple ports, 3 USB and 4 pin firewire, as well as an SD card slot, make the accessablity on this thing incredible.
The sound really surprised me. Although lacking bass, it was crisp and sharp, and didnt leave me running for a pair of headphones. The Toshiba software even leaves it open for you to plug in surround sound, if you feel so inclined.
There are a lot of little things about this machine that make it a lot easier to use. There is a volume control dial on the front, along with a built in mic, audio and external mic ports, as well as an on off switch for the wireless. When in tablet mode, a small joystick offers easy scrolling, while the buttons enable you to rotate the screen, and even open the task manager.
The machine does have a few drawbacks. The most glaring one is its weight. At over 6 pounds, it quickly takes a toll on your arm. one strange thing that I found, is that the CD drive button is enough exposed, that it will open with the slightest bump.
When customizing, I would recommend buying your memory from a different source. For some reason, Toshiba charges around $400 US for a gig of memory.
I'd also like to ad that this thing is tough as nails. I was picking it up off my desk the other day, when it slipped out of my hands and fell. I'm not that tall, but it was a good 5 foot drop and it hit edgewise on the leg of my rolling chair. Needless to say, the damage is only a cosmetic crack, and everything works fine.
On the software end, Windows XP Tablet is a little buggy (if you rotate the screen with the writing window open, it undocks it, but still wont let anything enter the top of the screen, as if it was still docked), but the note writing programs included free, as well as the downloads available from Microsoft, definently balence out all vices. The Toshiba software is intuitive, and makes your machine more effecient.
The battery life on this thing can be stretched to absurd limits. In its most effecient setting, this machine can get upwards of 4, and closer to 5 hours of battery life.
The screen can be a little tough to see in bright light, due to the protecting layer above it, but its easily solved by brightening the screen.
All in all, I highly reccomend this product, due to its intuitive software, tough design, functionality, and wonderful price.
